How We Got Started

Books to Go was started in September 2002 by two young women, Ann Miller and Karen Boyce. These ladies wanted to give back to the community and help those less fortunate than themselves . They decided on a bookmobile type organization to go to nursing homes and shut-ins. Several nursing homes had indicated that they did not have enough room for a large donation of books (which would tend to mean a small library).

Ann and Karen had both suffered short term injuries and realized they would have died of boredom without their books. They decided to give this opportunity to others whose infirmities were more long term. Initially they collected books from their home to bring to seniors in the nursing home.

Since its inception, the program has grown to include many more forms of entertainment such as; magazines, books on tape, tape recorders, movies, jigsaw and crossword puzzles and presents at Christmas. Additionally postcards are sent from vacation locales to the residents. The volunteers offer more than mere entertainment, their visits offer a connection to the outside world and personal interaction. These volunteers may be the only visitors some resident get. Books To Go is hoping to further expand the entertainment programs that are offered and provide a fun way for high school children to receive community service credits needed for graduation. Books To Go is a testimony to the fact that a small group can make a large impact by sharing their hobbies with others. It isn't hard to make a big difference in people's lives and there are plenty of people out there who need the services of Books To Go.
